Today was probably not the best day to experience my first race with a legit cross wind. Of course pretty much from the gun the pace was furious which is one of the main differences between your typical Nor-Cal P12 race and an NRC race. Initially even with the fast pace the group was together and I was feeling pretty good. Then came the exposed cross wind sections where I had multiple 500 watt plus efforts just to hang on a wheel, it was brutal. After about the 5th or 6th effort I just couldn’t hang, which in retrospect probably had a lot more to do with tactics than anything else. About 20-30 other guys got dropped at the same time and unfortunately our group tactics reminded me of the cat. 4 races from last year, no organization and people just sitting in not doing anything even though we probably weren’t more than 20 seconds off the main field initially. Eventually we all settled into the lame little grupo and lost big time up to the bottom of the 4,500 ft. climb and that’s where I had enough and decided to put in an effort. I was successful in punishing myself for my mistakes and made up some lost time and by the top I was in the main grupetto. I finished about 17:00 minutes down to the leaders but actually felt good today and hope that I can at least put together a somewhat respectable result on Sunday. All for now, time to rest….
