Racing 72 miles around Lake Tahoe has been a great way to end the race season every year. The event is so close to home (Truckee) and is in such an epic setting, that it’s hard to pass up. Most importantly, Marc Pro – Strava has won this unsanctioned pseudo-race three out of four times since 2008. We have an obligation to defend our title, and our record time (2:50 set in 2010).
The long, hard season had taken it’s toll on the team, as Nate Freed and I were the only two in green, pink and white at the 7am start in Zephyr Cove. It’s damn cold that early in Tahoe. So, with only four legs between us, we knew we lacked the horsepower needed to push the pace and break the record. But we could at least win, right? Right?
We messed up in major way by hesitating to follow an attack up the final climb on Highway 50. By the time I jumped to cover the move, it was too late, my waning climbing legs died half-way up the gap. Nate was able to jump when he saw me crumble up the road, but by that time the gap was too large to bridge solo. Egg in the face at the end of the race.
- Nate 4th ~2:58
