The Herbalife p/b Marc Pro – Nature’s Bakery Cycling Team Is Back For More In 2017!

written by Phil Mooney January 19, 2017

Team adds promising new riders, increases support from key technical sponsors, and continues on as a USA Cycling Domestic Elite Team in 2017.

Team Herbalife p/b Marc Pro – Nature’s Bakery is back for 2017! The team’s three cornerstone sponsors, Herbalife24, Nature’s Bakery, and Marc Pro all return to provide stability and continuity to the team. The 16-rider elite team, racing under the direction of long-time Bay Area cycling fixture Philip Mooney, will be registered as a USA Cycling Domestic Elite team in 2017.

The team will retain nearly all of the talent from their 2016 season, and bolsters the roster with the addition of 3 new riders. Sam Boardman, a senior English major at UCLA, will focus his big engine at national level events and hopes to prove his mettle against the clock in the individual time trial. Oakland’s own Matthew Tracey-Cook, a senior in High School and recent representative of the US at the Junior World Championships, joins the team and hopes to match his results on the mountain bike on the road. Look out for him when the road tilts up! Finally, the well-known and loved Blake Anton brings his considerable racing experience and expertise to the team and will lead us in our push for more international racing.

The team also welcomes key new technical sponsors into the h24cycling fold this year. KTM Bike Industries, with their iconic orange frames, will support the team with their top-of-the-line bikes designed in Austria. Rudy Project, the Italian sunglasses and helmet company, will provide their lids and shades to team riders. Finally, Praxis Works will supply the team with their industry leading bottom brackets, cranks, and a few new surprises as the season progresses.

Herbalife is excited to continue a successful partnership with the team into the third consecutive year. John Heiss, the Director of Sports and Fitness for Herbalife, underscored the company’s eagerness to partner with one of the nation’s strongest cycling presences, “I greatly enjoy working with elite athletes to help them get the full benefits of our products and succeed in competition. Additionally, the team is a perfect vehicle to help test and refine the Herbalife24 line of sports nutrition products we produce. As an avid cyclist and competitor myself, I’m looking forward to working with, riding with, and being inspired by the team.”

2015 and 2016 have been incredibly successful racing seasons for the team, with a number of notable breakthroughs on the national scene. In 2015, Justin Rossi’s win in the time trial at the Chico Stage Race and narrow 2nd place in the National Time Trial Championships cemented his place as one of the premier athletes in the nation in the race against the clock. In 2016, Tim Rugg’s podium finish in the GC at the Chico Stage Race, his podium in the White Rock Road Race at Canada’s BC Superweek, as well as his multiple stage wins while guest riding at the UCI 2.2 Tour of Rwanda proved he was one of the strongest riders in the nation. Willie Myers’ back to back State Criterium Championships and numerous race wins put him in the crosshairs as the top fast-finisher on the west coast.

In 2017, h24cycling hopes to expand on the previous season’s successes by continuing to focusing on elite cycling events all around the world. The preliminary schedule has the team racing across 12 states and 6 countries.

Team riders will be racing aboard bright orange KTM Revelator Prestige bikes with a cranks and bottom brackets supplied by northern California’s own Praxis Works, Ritchey Logic cockpits, and rolling on Token wheels show with IRC Tires. They will be wearing Jakroo custom cycling apparel, with helmets and glasses from Rudy Project. Custom BarFly mounts will hold Wahoo ELEMNT cycling computers that will link to Strava and Trainer Road. Marc Pro will continue its singular focus on maximizing the team’s post-exercise recovery.

I began road racing as an undergraduate after taking a class entitled “The Science of Cycling” as a winter term course at DePauw University. I joined the collegiate cycling team as a freshman, became hooked on cycling, and quickly became a Cat 1 racer on the road and track. I continued to race seriously after moving to northern California for graduate school at UC Davis (Geology). The 2010 season was my first season road racing on a national level at NRC races, riding for the Yahoo! Cycling Team. Immediately after finishing graduate school, I signed my first professional contract and spent the year racing in Europe with Team Raleigh. A few years and many miles later, I made the decision to retire from road racing and start to enjoy more leisurely rides on my mountain bike. In conjunction with this switch, I got married to my wonderful wife, Mandy, and took a more traditional job in the Department of Geology at Sonoma State University. In 2015, I continued to work at Sonoma State while taking over the helm as the owner and manager of Mooney Cycling LLC, the business umbrella that runs the Herbalife p/b Marc Pro - Nature's Bakery Team, and also launching the Bikelangelo brand of custom stem caps with some friends. You can now find me answering emails from my phone as I continue to enjoy riding around beautiful northern California!
